Mumbai, October 9, 2025 — In a major step toward the future of AI-driven commerce, Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have announced a pilot program to enable agentic payments through conversational AI interfaces such as ChatGPT. This initiative will allow users to make real-time UPI payments simply by chatting with an AI assistant—no forms, no OTPs, just natural language.
The announcement was made at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, where Razorpay and NPCI revealed that the pilot will enable AI agents, powered by OpenAI’s GPT models, to securely initiate and complete transactions on behalf of users using UPI infrastructure.
💡 What Are Agentic Payments?
Agentic payments refer to transactions executed by AI agents that understand user intent and act on it autonomously—within user-approved limits. In this case, a user can say:
“Order me a pack of batteries from BigBasket,”
and ChatGPT will not only find the product but also complete the purchase via UPI, powered by Razorpay’s payment infrastructure.
🤝 Partners in the Pilot
Airtel Payments Bank and Axis Banks are participating as banking partners in This.
BigBasket is one of the first e-commerce platforms integrated into the AI-powered flow.
OpenAI provides the GPT-based conversational interface, with Razorpay powering backend payments via its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.
🔐 Safety & Trust at the Core
NPCI and Razorpay have implemented multiple security layers to ensure safe transactions, including UPI-based authentication, spend limits, audit trails, and user overrides. The pilot will also align with India’s upcoming biometric verification rollout for UPI (facial and fingerprint), further enhancing secure and seamless AI-led payments.
🛒 Real-World Example
Imagine Meena, a working professional in Bengaluru, asking ChatGPT:
“Buy milk and bread from BigBasket for tomorrow morning, budget ₹200.”
The AI checks options, confirms with Meena, and initiates a UPI payment through Razorpay. Meena receives confirmation—all without leaving the chat.
This is the kind of frictionless shopping experience the pilot is designed to test and scale.
📈 What’s Next?
The pilot will measure success based on ease of use, user trust, transaction success rates, and fraud protection. NPCI and Razorpay plan to expand the pilot to more banks, platforms, and commerce categories in the coming months.
